Legg Perthes

Project description

Legg Perthes refers to avascular, aceptic necrosis of the head of the femur. The affected dogs are usually 4 to 11 months old and from small breeds. Clinical signs include laimness and pain of the hind limbs. Legg Perthes can affect one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) hind limbs. This project is a collaboration with Clemson University in the United States.

 

Breeds

Cairn Terrier, Poodles (Toy, Dwarf, Miniature), West Highland Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier, Schipperke.

Samples from Legg Perthes affected dogs from all breeds are welcome.

 

Which samples are needed:

  • dogs that have been diagnosed with Legg Perthes
  • close relatives (parents, siblings, offspring) of the affected dogs
  • healthy dogs over 6 years of age
